Maximise space in your garden room
24 Apr 2024
A garden room is a great addition to any home, offering a versatile space to use as an office, studio, gym, or anything that you want! But we know how easy it is for even the biggest spaces to feel cluttered if not thoughtfully organised. The last thing you want to be doing is fighting with boxes or moving furniture out of the way every time you use your room.
With a little planning and a few clever storage ideas, though, you can turn your garden room into a space that feels tidy, functional and even bigger than you thought.
Decide what you’ll use your room for (and stick to it!)
Before you even think about furniture, decide what you’re going to use your garden room for. Is it a dedicated home office? Is it a home gym? Maybe it's both? Whatever you use it for, knowing its function will make it so much easier to plan your design, layout and storage decisions. Trying to make one room do too many things is a fast track to clutter - and nobody wants that!
Strategic storage solutions

Look at your garden room and identify the areas that aren’t being used to their full potential. Incorporate clever storage solutions such as built-in shelves, modular cabinets and hidden compartments.
In small spaces, it’s often best to look up. Floating shelves, hanging hooks, or tall slim cabinets are all great at not eating up floor space.
Flexible furniture arrangements

If space is at a premium, then choose versatile furniture that does more than one job. Opt for stylish seating with hidden storage compartments, a folding wall desk, or a lift-up coffee table. Nest tables are also great as you can tuck them away when you don’t need them.
And if your garden room doubles as a guest space from time to time, a sofa bed is a brilliant choice. It works as a comfy spot to relax during the day and easily transforms into a cosy bed when needed.
Go bespoke
While off-the-shelf furniture is convenient, bespoke or built-in solutions can be game-changers for maximising space.
It also looks very cool! How about a wall-mounted pegboard for tools, or even a ceiling-mounted pulley system for items you only need now and then?
In the room below, the pool table folds up and slides into the hidden pocket to the rear of the office. How’s that for smart design!

Wall-mounted electronics
Mounting your TV or computer monitor on the wall frees up desk or console space, giving you more surface area for other activities.
Natural light and mirrors
Make the most of natural light to create a bright, welcoming atmosphere in your garden room. Skylights or large windows can completely transform the space, flooding it with sunshine, making it feel bigger and airier, and creating an inviting atmosphere that promotes productivity and well-being.
A well-placed mirror can also work wonders. Position it opposite a window or in a narrow spot to reflect light around the room and create the illusion of extra space. It’s a simple trick that makes a big difference.
With just a bit of imaginative thinking and clever organisation, you can turn your garden room into a space that’s both beautiful and brilliantly functional. Say goodbye to clutter and hello to calm.
