7 Surprising Ways to Create More Space in Your Home

30 May 2019

Bumping into furniture, tripping over clutter, knocking ornaments over - wouldn’t it be easier if we just had that little bit more space? When we reach our home’s capacity for storage and space this is a question we often end up asking ourselves! While moving house can seem like a logical solution, it often isn’t as straightforward as just packing up and moving somewhere that offers more space. So what can we do instead? Check out our 7 surprising storage solutions to help you create more space in your home!

  1. Repurpose Non-Used Areas

Neglected areas can be transformed into useful storage areas! We’re talking customised storage areas, storage beds and using vertical space! Sometimes creating more space requires a little creative thought!

Storage beds can utilise otherwise wasted space and can be a handy option for storing bed sheets and clothing, whilst built-in storage options under the stairs can provide that much-needed storage space. Built-in options can be customised to work with what space you have available and often don’t take up any extra floor space.

Don’t forget to make the most of your wall space! Adjustable shelving and cabinets that extend all the way up to the ceiling can give the illusion of higher ceilings. Using vertical space for storage can help prevent clutter from collecting on surfaces and help reduce the need for excess furniture that can take up floor space and make rooms feel smaller and more crowded.
  2. It’s the Time of Year for a Clutter Clear!

One simple way to create more space in your home is to do a big clutter clear out. If you feel like you’re running out of space it could be because you’ve got too many items lying around! Try not to have too many items covering surfaces like tables and countertops as this can make the place feel crowded and therefore smaller. Too much furniture and large decorative items can have a similar effect - if you’re looking to have more space, aim for a minimalist effect!
  3. Get a Wall Desk

Think you don’t have space for a home office? Think again! Wall desks are a great way to get the most out of the space without taking up as much square footage as a standalone desk. If you need office storage you can incorporate shelves above and below your work area.
  4. Play With Pattern or Go With Neutral Tones

The colour of your walls can play a big role in how big or small you perceive your room to be - usually lighter and neutral colours make rooms appear larger while darker colours and patterns tend to make rooms feel a bit smaller. However, that’s not to say you should be rid of darker colours and patterns altogether!

Play around with having a feature wall or area with bold colours and patterns. This is a particularly good option if you have high ceilings as it can (depending on the pattern and colour) draw your attention upwards making the room seem larger overall.
  5. Add Mirrors

This is perhaps one of the most commonly used tricks in the books when it comes to creating more space in your home - and it’s all an illusion! Mirrors can reflect artificial and natural light making rooms look larger, brighter and give the illusion of more depth. Have fun playing around with different types of mirrors - long vertical mirrors can make the most of high ceilings while multiple mirrors together can make for a very attractive feature wall!
  6. Multifunctional Areas and Objects

Making rooms multifunctional is a great solution for small homes that don’t have the luxury of using separate rooms for everything. Curtains and room dividers are a subtle yet effective way to create some privacy in the home without the cost of restructuring your layout. Dividing up large open-plan areas is a great way to get rooms to serve multiple purposes.

Take to the internet for some inspiration and think of what combinations would work best for you - common examples include bedroom/home office arrangements and living room/kitchen open plan spaces. Don’t just stop at your rooms - objects can serve multiple functions too! Don’t have enough space for a guest room? Try having a cosy sofa that can double as a guest bed.

  7. Make the Most of Your Garden With a Garden Room

Don’t forget to utilise that all-important garden space! Just because you haven’t got enough space indoors doesn’t mean that you can’t make more space outdoors! And what better way to make the most of neglected garden space than with your very own garden room! Garden rooms can be tailored to suit your needs and the space available.

Our highly insulated garden rooms can be used as home offices, guest rooms, comfy snugs, home gyms - the options are endless! In most cases you won’t need planning permission and, with cosy insulation, you can use your garden room all year round.
